20 Most Paused TV Moments Of The Decade

8. Brody Is Executed (Homeland - Season 3, Episode 12)

The Moment: Nicholas Brody's (Damian Lewis) scheming finally catches up to him, and in the season 3 finale, he is hanged by Iranian authorities while lover Carrie (Claire Danes) can do nothing but look on helplessly. Why It Had To Be Paused: For all of the show's issues, it has always delivered brilliant season finales, and the third season was no different. Few expected that the show's writers would dare kill off either Brody or Carrie, given that their relationship is essentially the lifeblood of the series and easily its most compelling element. That Brody went from being a celebrated war hero, to a terrorist, to being killed in such barbaric fashion is a testament to the show's brilliant unpredictability. It will remain to be seen whether Homeland can endure without Brody, though in honesty, Carrie's story should probably begin to wind down now, because Brody's absence leaves a huge void that likely cannot be filled by other characters.
