16. The Janitor Almost Wasn't Real

Scrubs JD Turk Elliot
NBC

The Janitor remains one of the show's most popular creations, a witty, weird prankster who spends the series tormenting J.D. But things were almost a lot different, as show creator Bill Lawrence went on record during the DVD commentary to announce that the character wasn't meant to last as long as he did.

According to Lawrence, he was worried the show was going to be cancelled after the first season, so he concocted a plan for the Janitor to just be a figment of J.D's imagination. This revelation would have been revealed in the season finale.

However, this never happened. The show was renewed for a second season, and Lawrence started allowing the character to increasingly interact with other characters, starting with Elliot in the late-season one episode "My Bad."
