20 Things You Didn't Know About Scrubs
15. Neil Flynn - Master Of The Ad-Lib
Speaking of the Janitor, it wouldn't be fair to talk about the character without giving a shout-out to his actor, Neil Flynn. According to Bill Lawrence and co-stars Zach Braff and Donald Faison, Flynn often went off-script and ad-libbed his lines, many of which found their way into the finished episodes and have gone on to become trademarks of the character.
Lawrence has gone to record to say that Flynn ad-libbed so much, he would sometimes not bothering writing him any lines at all, instead opting to have the script read "Whatever Neil says" where the Janitor's lines should be.
This ended up paying off massively, as many of the Janitor's lines are some of the funniest in the series. It also paid off for Neil Flynn, who followed up his stint on Scrubs with a lead role in the family sitcom The Middle between 2009 and 2018.
