14. Mad Sweeney - American Gods

Tabitha Gotham
Starz

American Gods is a sprawling, unique work in which all gods depicted in all religions do indeed exist and have been brought over to America by the various cultures who worshipped them. At the centre of this is Ian McShane's Mr. Wednesday, a reinvented Odin who plans to unite the Old Gods with the help of his leprechaun henchman Mad Sweeney.

Sweeney, originally a legendary Irish king, lost his way and much of his memory upon arriving in America, eventually landing in the employ of Mr. Wednesday and remaining fiercely loyal to him.

After a climactic episode centering on Sweeney's history however, and his gradual realisation of Wednesday's duplicitous ways, he charges at her with the legendary Norse spear 'Gungnir', only for protagonist Shadow Moon to turn it upon him and impale him, mortally wounding Sweeney. As he slowly bleeds out, he utters his poignant final words: "I used to be a king".
