20 TV Episodes That Are Totally Flawless

10. Who Goes There - True Detective

The Sopranos
HBO

Up until the midpoint of True Detective's masterful first season, the driving force of the story had been the performances of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and the dark, nightmarish tension of the murder mystery at its core.

Slow, menacing and over-flowing with character interactions that always hid something sinister and unsaid, the show was methodically creepy and harrowing in its worldview.

But then came the season's fourth episode, where the tension erupts into a relentless stream of action and shock reveals, as McConaughey's mystifying cop Rust Cohle goes off the grid to infiltrate a criminal gang and finally get some answers about the case that is now thoroughly haunting him.

Coming complete with perhaps the greatest one-take ever committed to the small screen, Who Goes There is an explosive display of gritty action set pieces which balances its disturbing tone, sudden violence and expert character building with near-surgical precision.
