20 TV Episodes That Are Totally Flawless

19. The Contest - Seinfeld

The Sopranos
NBC

Taking place at the mid-way point of Seinfeld's fourth season, The Contest represents the best of Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld's masterful sitcom, as each member of the core gang makes a pact to see who can go the longest without masturbating.

Due to the fact that it was airing on prime time TV and NBC has no interest in causing too much of a stir with the controversial topic, the word "masturbation" is never used and every joke in the episode is a smartly veiled innuendo that works wonders to capture the ridiculous hilarity and frequent awkwardness of the story.

Winning a well-deserved Emmy for his script, Larry David coined the euphemism "master of my domain" with the episode, and tackled a taboo subject without once feeling over-the-top or crass. As far as sitcoms go, The Contest is nothing short of a comedy masterclass.
