Giving David Lynch free reign with his own TV show proved to be a massive success at the dawn of the 90s. A surrealist nightmare of horror and indecipherable mystery, Twin Peaks not only found the master filmmaker at his hypnotising best, but it also allowed him to craft a story of still-unrivalled creativity and thrilling complexity.

Starting out as an investigative drama with Kyle MacLachlan's eccentric FBI agent Dale Cooper entering the titular town to find the murderer of the secretive Laura Palmer, the harrowing mind-bender soon became a supernatural horror, a twisted fantasy, and a surreal journey through time and space all at once.

From the moment that Laura's corpse is found on the beach, wrapped in plastic, to the moment Twin Peaks: The Return digs deep into the threat of nuclear annihilation, David Lynch and Mark Frost crafted one of the most compelling, unforgettable viewing experiences of the generation, full of as many inventive twists as Twin Peaks itself features odd-ball characters and ominous charm.
