20 Vintage Kids TV Shows From The Golden Age

17. Pigeon Street

title1 Pigeon Street emerged in 1981 as part of the BBC's See Saw series for preschoolers. There were 13 episodes in total each lasting 15 minutes. The programme was repeated several times. The programme followed the every day goings on of the characters who lived in Pigeon Street - an area of flats and terraced houses. There were a bunch of pigeons but they were just there - they didn't add anything to the show. Characters include Long Distance Clara - a lorry driver, Her partner Hugo the Chef, twins Molly and Polly, Mr Baskerville - a detective, Mr Jupiter- an astronomer and Mr Macadoo - the pet shop owner. The characters in the street are all ethnically diverse and usually help each other out in the episodes. But what really steals the show is the music and songs for each character. It must be 30 years since I watched the darn programme but I still have Long Distance Clara's theme tune burned into my memory! Iconic for those of us who are a certain age.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
