20 Vintage Kids TV Shows From The Golden Age

16. The Magic Roundabout

the magic roundabout Much beloved stop motion action from Eric 'father of Emma' Thompson. The cartoon itself was a French production but the BBC acquired the rights to it, and had Eric Thompson write new scripts and voice overs. The result has been phenomenally successful - children adore it for its engaging characters and adults love it for its dry wit. Dougal the dog has hallucinogenic adventures with his mates - Brian the snail, Zebedee a jack in the box, Dylan a rabbit. He has a human friend called Florence. They all have various trippy adventures that suggest the writer may have been ingesting strange substances. Probably more adult oriented than children-based, the programme has one down in the annals of children's TV as a bonafide classic.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
