Jon Snow well and truly put his life on the line by heading to Hardhome with Tormund Giantsbane to try and convince the Wildlings to join them in the coming fight against the White Walkers - it was a bold but necessary gambit which saved thousands of lives. Still, given that their expressed desire when arriving at Hardhome is to talk to the elders and convince them that they're not their for violence but rather to save the Wildlings from certain death, it doesn't take long for Tormund to lose his cool with de facto leader the Lord of Bones. A few prods to the chest from his weapon is all the provocation Tormund needs to take if from the Lord of Bones and beat him to death - it's a harsh life beyond the wall, that's for sure.
