This was the moment when it became clear no one was safe. It was the longest day in Jack Bauer's life; he had finally defeated the Drazen family and uncovered his soon to be long time nemesis, Nina Myers, as the mole. As he triumphantly returns to CTU and embraces his daughter, it suddenly dawns that his wife is missing. After a brief search he finds her with a gunshot to her stomach. The season ends with him cradling her lifeless body, whispering a tearful apology. Teri's death was historically a dark moment for television. Just before Jack is about to ride off into the sunset (a bit of a recurring theme in 24) his world comes crashing down with Nina's single act of sheer malice; made even worse by Teri's news she is pregnant with their second child. The portrayal of Teri received mixed reviews from fans, most citing the amnesic storyline she went through as frustrating and a tad ridiculous, but there's no denying the impact her death has on the audience. It was a moment we never see coming and one that shapes the 24 universe for years to come. Jack never recovers from her death, and his relationship with his daughter is never the same. Teri was the first main character to die and the first to be honoured by the silent clock.
