The producers stated it would have to be something big that brought Jack Bauer out of retirement, and this was it! While writing his memoirs, David Palmer walks aimlessly around his apartment. His mind is clearly not where his attention should be and as he looks through the window, there's a collective gasp from TV audiences as a bullet cracks through the glass and pierces his throat. He dies instantly in the arms of his brother Wayne, who will go on to be elected President for the next season. His assassination is the bang that kicked off one of 24's best seasons. Jack is forced out of hiding to avenge his fallen friend, in the process uncovering a conspiracy that goes as high as the President of the United States. David Palmer was one of the greatest characters in 24. Played superbly by Dennis Haysbert, he built his reputation on honour and integrity with a voice and stature that demanded attention and respect; a true leader that earned Jack and the audience's respect. It is an absence the audience felt throughout the rest of the series as no one is quite capable of filling the shoes left in the Oval office. David Palmer goes down as one of the best fictional Presidents we silently wished had been real. Did we miss anyone? Add your comments below and thank you for reading.
