Jack Bauer is not allowed to have a happy ending. With seven episodes to go, Day 8 seemed to be wrapping up early and Jack was preparing to ride off into the sunset with Renee. But the audience knows something that Jack doesn't (the series hasn't finished yet!) and it is only a matter of time before he is forced back into the field. Unfortunately, it's at the expense of Renee, who earlier in the episode recognises a man disguised as EMT from her days undercover with the Russian mob. To keep her from talking, she is shot by a sniper moments after she and Jack have retired to be together. Audiences were still reeling from the death of Omar Hassan only an hour before when doctors emerge from the operating room with the news they couldn't save her. Renee was a character many fans adored, evolving from the FBI operative who saw the law as black and white into the female version of Jack. She was strong willed, passionate and deadly and the chemistry between her and Jack was brilliant, and it gave the show a different dynamic. Renee's death kick starts a rampage Sterling Archer would be proud of. Kiefer Sutherland takes Jack to a dark place we haven't seen him in since David Palmer's death, playing judge, jury and executioner; violently disposing of anyone who is remotely linked to her death. You only have to look at the destruction inside the Russian diplomat's room to know just how far he can go when pushed to his limits.
