24: 10 Most Heartbreaking Deaths

6. George Mason (Day 2)

Any long suffering boss would identify with George Mason; trying to keep rule-breaking Jack Bauer on a short leash is an impossible task. Originally a cowardly character, he clashed with Jack multiple times - someone you wouldn't have thought would have earned a place on this list but in the face of death he showed his true colours. With Los Angeles preparing itself for an imminent nuclear attack, Mason was busy trying to escape his responsibilities. As he tries to get away he's given a lead to chase up and is inadvertently exposed to a lethal dose of plutonium and given only a week to live. After an attack on CTU, George defies his doctor and rejoins the search for the bomb anyway. The problem was the device could not be defused, and Jack volunteers to fly it out of LA so it could detonate away from the populated area. Mason stows onto the flight, and despite Jack's reluctance, George takes over the controls and makes Jack parachute to safety. His courageous act saves the lives of millions, including Jack and prompts him to reassess his life and build bridges with his daughter.
