Batman's origins had been rehashed so many times that we didn't quite know what to make of Gotham when it first arrived on our screens. The irony is that by the time the show came to an end in 2019, we still didn't know what to make of it - only in a completely different way.

Instead of going down the Smallville route and producing an original-albeit-familiar origin story for Bruce Wayne, Gotham threw caution to the wind and produced the wackiest interpretation of The Dark Knight's beginnings to ever grace, well, anything. Though it essentially started out as a police procedural drama that followed Detective Harvey Bullock and do-gooder rookie detective Jim Gordon as they got caught up in the Wayne Family murder investigation, it truly found its groove when it loosened those shackles and just rolled with it.

A big bonkers Elseworlds story, Gotham was a visually-stunning series that heightened the dark depths of DC's most famous city and through its unique interpretations of Bruce Wayne, Selina Kyle and those wonderful Jokers-to-be, it soared to unexpected heights throughout its absolutely crazy run. Five seasons just weren't enough...
