25 Best Superhero TV Shows Of All Time

6. Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Arrow Season 1
Mutant Enemy

An unexpected entry? Maybe. Deserving of a place? Absolutely.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer may not be based on a comic book, but its success ironically ended up spawning one. That aside, even if it didn't, the show would still be at home on this list.

Remember the discussion we just had about how Lois and Clark signified the beginning of a more realistic and less cheesy direction for the superhero genre? Yeah, well Buffy was the next step in that evolution, recycling the genre's conventions in a supernatural dramedy to wield surprisingly successful results.

A trailblazer for modern superhero shows - specifically female-led ones - it positioned Sarah Michelle Gellar's smart-mouthed heroine as a relatable, funny and most importantly human character - one that just-so-happened to be capable of saving the world.

Yes, the show's incredible mythology, strong writing and electric performances thrilled an entire generation and, in the process, gifted us all with the world's best superhero to never come from a comic book.
