25 Greatest Sci-Fi TV Shows Of All Time

13. Star Trek: The Next Generation

The Star Trek franchise transcended time itself to be reborn in the late '80s in a spin-off sequel set just over a century after the original series - a decision that allowed The Next Generation to carry on the legacy of the franchise while essentially rebooting it at the same time.

Focusing on the crew of the USS Enterprise-D in the 24th century, it wasn't quite as timeless as the original series, but it was every bit as intriguing - and the performance from Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean Luc-Picard made even the most outlandish dialogue sound like it belonged in a Shakespearean classic.

The fact is that Star Trek: The Next Generation recreated the success of the original series, surpassing it in terms of viewers and introducing the Star Trek franchise to, well, the next generation. Now that's how you carry on a legacy and carve out one for yourself.
