Poor Kes - she wasn't great but she did deserve better.

Jennifer Lien may not have been the strongest actress in the cast but when given the right material, she could often deliver great performances. Her firing at the end of the third season didn't create too many ripples in the plot itself as she had largely become redundant at that point, barely serving much of the overall plot at all.

Her exit was handled as well as possible, allowing her the room to return if the writers wanted but removing her from the plot. As the show went on, as often happens the idea to bring a character back was born. However, why they turned the sweet and loveable Kes into an insane killing machine is stretching reason. She blames the crew for pushing her away, or something, when she wasn't ready. That's it. So she's going to go back in time, kill everyone on board and escape with her younger self.

It makes about as much sense as it sounds, even with some fairly impressive visuals and the return of the Vidiians after several seasons of absence. But none of it comes together in any kind of satisfying way. It is an episode that is simple shoehorned in for the sake of adding a little drama to an otherwise dull character. Best avoided - let Kes's story finish with The Gift.
