25 WORST Episodes Of Star Trek EVER

18. Aquiel - TNG

Star Trek Aquiel
CBS

Bad dog.

Another entry from the Next Generation's sixth season, this one centers on Geordi and his ongoing search for a girlfriend. Producer Jeri Taylor commented on the fact that, with the O'Briens moving over to Deep Space Nine, the Next Generation had lost its only married couple and was now depicting a future full of single people. Aquiel was to be a love interest for Geordi but the idea never got off the ground.

There are several reasons that are blamed for this. One laid the blame at guest actress Renée Jones, saying that she didn't suit the dynamic of the future and that she had no chemistry with Levar Burton. Another laid the blame on the effects work. The look of the alien once revealed was subcontracted out and when it was returned to production staff, everyone was unhappy but no one had any time to do anything about it. So Geordi is threatened by what appears to be a melting potato in his quarters, which somewhat robs the scene of any dramatic tension.

The plot is similar to both early detective movies and the first season of the Expanse, wherein the investigators fall in love with the subject of their searches. It is an idea that is better suited to a longer form of storytelling and here it is quite rushed. However, one thing that is always a positive - any excuse for a dog on screen and the episode gets a whole extra point in the plus column.
