Since its debut, The Walking Dead has been a constant fan favourite with enough heartbreak, death, violence and horror to keep even its most cynical viewers entertained, thanks in large part to its endearing cast and awe-inspiring scope.

With its end imminent and its quality higher than ever, now seems a perfect time to celebrate the very best of Robert Kirkman's drama.

Taking a trip down memory lane, this list will detail the show's most iconic, pivotal and affecting moments, whether it's the brutal death scene of a beloved character, a harrowing speech, an epic battle, or a quiet heart-to-heart that still leaves fans teary eyed to this day.

With major spoilers, here are the 30 greatest moments in The Walking Dead.

30. Michonne Confronts The Governor

The Walking Dead Negan
AMC

Over the years, The Walking Dead has been home to countless brutal fight scenes, but few have been quite as feral and damaging as Michonne's bloody clash with The Governor in the show's classic third season.

After leading a small group to Woodbury in an attempt to save a captive Glenn and Maggie, Michonne abandons her newfound allies and goes after the community's ruthless leader, seeking revenge for all the pain he's already inflicted on her.

Killing his reanimated daughter, Michonne finds herself badly beaten by the brutish killer, but gains the upper hand by stabbing him in the eye with a shard of glass. It's a bloody, well-choreographed tussle, highlighting The Governor's power, but also emphasising that Michonne is not a woman anyone should cross.
