Emerald City is a dark re-imagining of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz purportedly in the vein of Game of Thrones, and featuring a modern and more sophisticated examination version of L. Frank Baum's original Oz books. Rather than the young naive girl, this Dorothy will be 20 years old, and find herself in the middle of a battle for control of Oz, where the rules are all different to the version we've all grown up with. The Selling Point: The merry old land of Oz is enduringly popular for a reason. The Concerns: 2012's period of reimagining fairy tales in a darker tone didn't exactly breed success, but hopefully the GoT-like aspirations will stop that happening again.
17. Finding Carter (2014)
It might not have the high concept of some of the others on this list, but this MTV series created by Emily Silver, and starring Kathryn Prescott has a brilliantly strong concept. It will follow Carter, a young teenage girl whose world is thrown into chaos when she finds out the woman she considered her mother had abducted her when she was a child, and the aftermath as she looks to get used to her new life, and is still drawn to her abductee. The Selling Point: The story sounds like the perfect opportunity for a lot of tension. The Concerns: Why does it have to be on MTV?!
