4 Ups & 2 Downs From Doctor Who Series 12 - Nikola Tesla's Night Of Terror

1. The Sonic Is Being Overused Once Again

Compared to the recurring trope of Series 11 that got a little too out of hand, the sonic screwdriver has taken much more of a backseat so far in series 12. However, Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror sees it almost never leave the Doctor's hand. To make matters worse, nothing really revolves around the sonic during this episode. No major plot point is discovered through the sonic being used. Instead, it's being whipped out at any given occasion- because..?

When the paparazzi are at the window of Tesla's office and not-so-subtly takes a snap of the proceedings inside, The Doctor goes straight for the screwdriver. But- why? Most of the time the sonic is used throughout the episode, The Doctor is left in no better position than where she was before it was pointed at something. The only time it does what it's supposed to was when the Skithra Queen was sent back up to her ship and blasted out of the sky.

The sonic is edging ever-closer to being annoying again, and writing 'whip out the screwdriver for no apparent reason' after every few pages in a script isn't going to help.
