4 Ups & 2 Downs From Doctor Who Series 12 - Nikola Tesla's Night Of Terror
3. The Skithra Creatures Are Terrifying
Getting DNEG on board to take point on visual effects is one of the best decisions the new Doctor Who production team made for the Chibnall era of Who. Even when an episode overall has been a dud, the exceptional visual effects at least try and polish the turd of a script- looking at you, The Tsuranga Conundrum. The 'drone' creatures of the Skitrha are remniscient of giant alien scorpions, something that wouldn't look all out of place in the new DOOM video games.
Not only is their design spectacular, they're brought to life with incredible detail by DNEG. Even their compositing into live-action scenes, such as when chasing Yaz and Thomas Edison through the streets in the close of the final act look brilliant, and not at all as dodgy as Who's CGI has looked in the past. They're the kind of foe that would send children fleeing to behind the sofa just from seeing a still image of them, so imagine how the younger audience took to them scuttling all over a vintage New York city.
