During the season-long 'The Trial Of A Time Lord' story, The Sixth Doctor was faced by The Valeyard, who was editing evidence against him to show The Doctor in a bad light. It was later revealed that The Valeyard was a version of The Doctor, seeking to take his remaining regenerations and be given a new lease on life. But, if The Doctor won't run out of regenerations, then where does The Valeyard fit in?

When The Master reveals the truth of The Valeyard to The Doctor, these are his exact words:

"There is some evil in all of us, Doctor. Even you. The Valeyard is an amalgamation of the darker sides of your nature, somewhere between your twelfth and final incarnation, and may I say you do not improve with age."

Much like The Watcher, who observed The Fourth Doctor in Logopolis, The Valeyard is not actually a future Doctor, but mere aspects of them brought to reality. This version can only truly live as an independent entity if they take The Doctor's regenerations, effectively replacing his mind with the darkest aspects that can ever rise from it.

After hearing that you are what you eat, Mik took a good hard look at his diet and realised he might just be a szechuan spare rib alongside prawn fried rice.
