One of the key scenes in 'The Time Of The Doctor' is when The Doctor, out of regenerations and about to die, is gifted a whole new regeneration cycle by the Time Lords. Now we know that The Doctor was the originator of regeneration and seemingly is not limited in the way that the Time Lords are, so why didn't he just regenerate?

This is actually so simple that most people will have already figured it out. For over a thousand years of his then-known lifespan, The Doctor has regarded himself a normal member of his race. He knows that he can regenerate and he knows that it will happen up to twelve times. As far as he's concerned, that applies to him because The Division has removed all parts of his life that contradict it. Just as we don't need to flap our arms to know we can't fly, he doesn't need to try and regenerate to know it won't work.

He has no idea what trying to regenerate when he's not got any regeneration energy left would even do to him if he did. It may simply bring about his death and leave the planet defenceless. And so he doesn't try.
