5 David Attenborough Documentaries To Change The World
3. Climate Change: The Facts (2019)
Such is the magnitude of Climate Change: The Facts and arguably any of the top three on our list, that their positions are interchangeable. However, this documentary was the first to truly highlight the irony of our destructive relationship with the world.
20 of the hottest years on record came in the last 22. Sea levels have already risen and extreme weather cycles are becoming more common place. Yet Attenborough didn’t just reveal the damage climate change is reaping but also that we already have the capacity to prevent further destruction. This raises the question: why haven’t we?
The explanation was shocking to say the least: there is reluctance to make the move amongst those who matter most. Fossil fuel companies deliberately stifle progress while governments drag their feet. Even so, for all this issue’s complexities, Sir David’s plea remains simple: we must act now.
While it’s difficult to measure the impact of such a recent documentary beyond shock factor, the power of this piece can be calculated by other means. Not only has it exposed millions to the fact that something needs to be done but it has challenged those who deny what is necessary.
