2. Food Wars

If you didn’t already know, Japanese food is delicious. What’s even better is an anime series about Japanese food. Food Wars is a surprisingly fun series filled with great characters, high stakes (no pun intended), and mouth-watering animation.

Adapted from the Shonen Manga created by Yuto Tsukuda, the story follows amateur chef, Soma Yukihira. Working in the family-run restaurant owned by his father, Joichiro Yukihira, Soma strives to be a great chef, enough to outclass his father in the kitchen. Often competing with one another, Soma has never won against his father. However, opportunity knocks when Joichiro closes down the restaurant for a while and sends Soma to the Totsuki Saryo Culinary institute—a premier school where only a small percentage of students graduate each year.

As the school is so prestigious, the students are cut-throat and competitive in their classes and extra-curricular activities. So much so, in fact, that anyone at any time can call a Food War on a fellow classmate. A high-stakes cooking challenge, Food Wars can serve as a deciding factor in anything from getting a seat on the coveted Council of Ten or even getting another student expelled.

This series is a joy to watch. The relationships with the characters will have you coming back for seconds. The humour is top-notch, excitement is never too far from the screen, and as previously mentioned, the animation is absolutely mouth-watering.

Final note: food-gasms are a thing in this series, and they are both hilarious and descriptive.

Living in a place colder than it is north of The Wall, Brad keeps warm with all the excitement that comes from a good anime series, comic book, or movie. Being an opinionated sort of fellow puts him in a precarious position with friends and strangers, but applying that superpower to the world of writing seems to be doing alright for him.
