5 Reasons How I Met Your Mother Finale Is As Bad As You Remember (And 3 Reasons It Isn't)

6. Isn't As Bad: It Sticks With The Themes Of The Show

Despite the narrative and the aforementioned divorce infuriating those who had sat through all of season nine, one of the best parts of the finale is how well it sticks with the themes and tone of the show.

Despite its issues, Last Forever never loses its touch when it comes to tackling the idea that life is messy and unpredictable and love is both confusing and illogical.

The fate of the Mother, for example, though far from being the best part of the show, showcases Bays and Thomas's commitment to creating a sitcom that resonates with the more tragic and relatable aspects of life.

The same could be said of Barney and Robin's divorce, which as a development makes sense with the show's themes, but is of course let down by the build-up to the wedding.

Each characters' endings are complex, messy and surprising, and that's exactly what the show had been saying about life throughout its run.
