2. A Focus On The Word
What I mean by this is actually a couple of things. First, forty shows of the one hundred and one recently voted by the Writer's Guild as the best written of all time have come inside of the last ten years. That's right, shows that either began, are still on air, or aired their final episode within the last ten years. Since 2003, almost half the list is comprised of shows from this era. That's amazing. The second point is that authors are becoming a larger focus in television. Stephen King has never been a stranger to the small screen and his presence will be felt this summer with the premier of, Under The Dome. Word has even been leaked that he'd like to write an episode himself should it get a second season. HBO's Game of Thrones is an adaptation of George RR Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire series of novels. He is on the staff as a producer and writes one episode per season. Elmore Leonard, possibly out greatest living writer, has seen a brilliant series based on a character of his develop on FX with, Justified. He also is on staff as a producer and occasionally writes for the series as well. When you go after some of our greatest writers, get them involved and do the source material justice, we're left with astonishing results. It's high time this became a regular practice. We're also seeing an influx of tv coming from the minds of stand up comedians. Louis CK, Jim Jeffries and Marc Maron are all seeing great success and we're reaping the benefits.
