5 Reasons You Should Watch Mr. Robot
3. Iconography and a Love Letter to Hollywood
Another thing that can make your show stand out is to give it a big piece of iconography - preferably something that can be sold as merchandise.
Think about it: all of your favourite shows have something you can put on a t-shirt that only a fan of the show will properly understand. Breaking Bad has the Los Pollos Hermanos logo, Game Of Thrones has all the crests of the families, and Supernatural has got all the Winchester Brothers apparel.
Mr. Robot is no exception. The most iconic thing from the show is the logo and mask of the hacker group fSociety, a mask worn to symbolise the evil of capitalism as it resembles the Monopoly Man. Though sceptics will say that this is slightly derivative of the Guy Fawkes mask from V For Vendetta this is, funnily enough, the intention.
Sam Esmail has openly stated that several of his favourite films and television shows have inspired the story and creation of Mr. Robot. Just in the first season you will see some subtle (and some not so subtle) references to films like The Matrix and Fight Club.
While the dialogue is steeped in references to films and televisions shows, several of Elliot's flashbacks to his childhood take place in a cinema, to the point that one episode even takes great lengths to explain to you the best way of eating a combination of popcorn and M&Ms - showing that Elliot's life, like Sam Esmail's and the audiences' have been dedicated to film and cinema.
This and the numerous mentions that Elliot's favourite film is the all time classic Back To The Future 2 tells you that Mr. Robot is a show written by movie buffs and is written very much for movie buffs.
If you've spent the majority of your media watching life dedicated to films and are thinking of checking out some TV then Mr. Robot is definitely where you should start.
