4. How I Met Your Mother
I know Im being a bit pre-emptive here, but the opening of How I Met Your Mothers eighth season was built as its last. I mean, the first episode opened at Barney and Robins wedding, where Ted meets the mother, and then ended with Ted and the mother at the same train station. So Ted is bound to meet the mother in a couple of weeks. So surely this current season of How I Met Your Mother should be its last? Apparently not. In December, half way into the eighth season, it was confirmed that How I Met Your Mother would return for a ninth and final season. But how does that fit in with the narrative timeline? Is the ninth season going to be renamed Getting To Know Your Mother or How I Met Your Mother But Didnt Speak To Her Or Meet Her Again Until A Year Later When I Then Realised I Loved Her? It wont work. Sure, itll be entertaining television all the same, but there will be discontent. Im very sceptical, yes. Id love to be proved wrong and for the writers to come up with some ingenious swerve. But I honestly cant think of any logical reason as to why we wont meet the mother in the eighth season finale.
