5 Ways A&E Can Improve Bates Motel In Season 2

4. Make It More Reminiscent Of The Original Movie

psycho-shower-curtain-2 The shock factor that I mentioned in my last point is one of the main reasons Psycho is such a fantastic movie. The audience never has a clue who will live or who will die and that adds a tone of suspense that elevated the movie to its classic status. The show needs this same element if it is truly going to do justice to it's namesake. I'm not saying they just need to start killing off all of the main characters but they certainly need to start doing more to catch the audience off guard. The reveal that Deputy Shelby was in league with the underground sex trade was surprising but it rang hollow because it was an uninteresting development. Shelby was a boring character and his death wasn't rather anti-climatic. Although, when Abernathy put Shelby's corpse in Norma's bed that was just the type of thing I wanted to see from the show. The cliche' romance between Norma Shelby was incredibly dull but at least it served to heighten the reveal of his body in her bed. One way I feel they could give the show a surprise element is introduce a new character that the audience can become attached to only to have them killed off within a few episodes. A new hotel guest could work in this hypothetical storyline. Now make the audience think that Norman is responsible for the death but add some kind of minor detail that suggests someone else did it. That way the show is allowed to keep slowly developing Norman to be psychotic but keep the threat of violence just under the surface.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
