https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmXoHKzp4Lc The TARDIS has gone haywire, the controls moving by themselves, almost locking Ben and Polly out of the ship, when they do finally get in, they see the Doctor collapsed on the floor and the change begins in a blaze of light. As far as viewers at the time were concerned, the Doctor had just died and things would never be the same again. Now, we take regeneration for granted, at the end of 'The Tenth Planet' however there was nothing to say what had just happened, where the Doctor had gone and who this new man was. There was more than just a hint of uncertainty.
9. The End Of Time: Part 1
The Master has returned, in force. Hijacking the Immortality Gate, the Doctor's nemesis transforms every human on Earth into a duplicate of him. Every single person on Earth has the face of the Master, the men, the women, the children, worldwide. Only Donna is unaffected, but far from safe as she begins to remember her time with the Doctor and her mind begins to burn. The Master's maniacal laugh can be heard from all corners of the planet, but beyond The Time Lords are returning. The pantheon of Time Lords, seemingly deluded chant along with the venom (and spit) spewing Timothy Dalton 'The end of time itself!'. It's a moment we never thought we'd see in the new series, but here it was, in all its glory.
8. The Invasion: Episode 6
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqOEyeDvfJA The entire sequence is backed by an eerie vibration as people going about their daily business stop in their tracks. After this, the only movement seen is the Cybermen as they march into view at the steps of St Pauls Cathedral. If you were to ask which Cybermen moment people remember from the classic series, this is often the one they will refer to. Earth belongs to the Cybermen!
7. The Stolen Earth
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szPvrLXfZ2o The episode ends with the Doctor being gunned down by a Dalek moments before being reunited with Rose Tyler. Hauled back to the TARDIS by his companions, he sees his hands begin to glow with golden light. The Doctor climbs to his feet and announces hes regenerating before exploding in a burst of lenergy. A week of speculation regarding the 'regeneration' followed as no preview copies of the episode were sent to press, meaning this was an incredibly well-kept secret, especially when you consider we live in the information age. In retrospect it was obvious that there would be some cop out (the Doctor siphoned off his regeneration into the hand he lost fighting the Sycorax leader), and the disppointment which plagued Journeys End and have been felt only recently in Time of the Doctor.
6. The Mind Robber: Episode 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7QiQUFQ53U It is firmly established in the episode how all the normal physical rules have been ditched, and the finale doesnt pull any punches in proving that. The TARDIS explodes, leaving Jamie and Zoe clinging to the console as it spins into a void and the Doctor is flung into the Darkness. It isnt a high-speed energetic scene. In fact, it's disturbingly calm and serene, giving us a dream-like sequence that spells trouble in every imaginable way.
