50 Best Doctor Who Cliffhangers

40. The Green Death: Episode 2

€˜The Green Death€™ or €˜The One With the Maggots€™ delved into the creepy crawly realm of Doctor Who scares. Some viewers must have been heaving as maggots, complete with a sea of green slime pour out of a crevice in the abandoned coal mine. The puppet maggots are let loose, showing themselves to be downright frightening with their snapping jaws and haunting the nightmares of children and adults alike. An exciting and repulsive moment in equal measure.

39. The Space Museum: Episode 1

This cliffhanger was uncharacteristic of the time and it really packs a dramatic punch in almost every way to the extent that it€™s almost cinematic. The Doctor and companions have spent the episode unseen, unheard and haven't been able to interact with the planet on which they have landed. Upon seeing themselves in cases as exhibits they witness a future they must prevent. Momentarily, events synchronise and the battle begins to prevent the future they saw becoming reality.

38. The Ark: Episode 2

Upon their departure from the Ark, carrying humans and their servants the Monoids to their new home of Refusis, the Doctor and his companions leave with a statue of man only half built (clearly, they weren€™t bothered about excess weight). Only when they immediately return many years later, the statue is complete, only something has gone very wrong indeed. Instead of the head of a human, it has the head of a Monoid!

37. The War Games: Episode 9

The most significant turning point in 'The War Games' is at the climax of episode 9. The entire episode builds up to the fact the Doctor has to effectively give himself up to the Time Lords because the situation is far too grave to handle himself. At the end of the episode and despite making a run for it, it becomes clear the Doctor may be about to get his comeuppance, as his own people intercede.

36. Spearhead From Space: Episode 3

This is a cliffhanger that hardly gets talked about, but it is quite simply chilling. General Scobie has been chosen to have a waxwork dummy made of him. This immediately spells trouble in an Auton story. The General is on the telephone to the Brigadier when there is a knock at the door. He is confronted with a shiny, tacky, mirror image that advances toward him with obvious intent. Needless to say, it's not going to end well for him.
