50 Best Doctor Who Cliffhangers

35. The Leisure Hive: Episode 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxay8YsC7_Q Romana watches on the monitor as the newfangled tachyon generator suddenly activates with the Doctor trapped inside. On the monitor, the Doctor raises his arms, spread-eagled. Then, one by one, all his limbs separate, giving us all nightmares. But not only that - as the camera crash zooms into the Doctor€™s face he lets out the most horrifying scream, and sends you scurrying back behind the sofa.

34. The Empty Child

This cliffhanger is double-barreled in the fact that not only are the Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack being closed in on by a hospital full of Gas Mask Zombies crying for their mummies like a manifestation of the plague, but also because Nancy is left at the mercy of her lost little brother. She stares into his disk-like eyes, we can see for the first time inside the child€™s head and discover why he is nicknamed 'The Empty Child'. This moment alone reassured viewers that despite the long absence, 'Doctor Who' still had it!

33. City Of Death: Episode 1

The ending to episode 1 of €˜City of Death€™ is so delightfully simple, but all the more memorable for it. Count Scarlioni, a suave if shady fellow, locks himself in his basement, looking into a mirror. But far from being vain, he touches his face. Suddenly he grabs his cheeks with his hands and tears his own face off! Beneath lies the grotesque countenance of the Jagaroth.

32. Terror Of The Zygons: Episode 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29LDQ-VWyw0 Superb direction from Douglas Camfield means that what is actually a very basic cliffhanger premise truly sticks in the mind. Little more seen of the Zygons than a pair of eyes during the episode, building up masses of tension, the big reveal is sudden, unexpected and horrific. This is partly due to the fantastic Zygon costumes but also Elisabeth Sladen€™s chilling scream of terror.

31. Dalek Invasion Of Earth: Episode 1

This cliffhanger suffers a bit from style over substance, as once the Dalek emerges from the Thames a few moments later you wonder what it was doing in there in the first place. Fortunately there is a big distraction from this!
"Daleks? On Earth?"
The Thames was and is pretty filthy, so seeing any living creature emerge from the water was very unexpected. Credit to the poor Dalek operator who was inside at the time.
