Once again the Doctor is inside the tachyon generator when it is sabotaged. The Doctor survives but at a cost. He leaves the generator to see a wall of shocked faces as he has aged 500 years. Apart from being a punishment that would have killed any other man, but what makes the moment memorable is that it isnt resolved for another 2 episodes.
24. Genesis Of The Daleks: Episode 1
As Sarah roams the wastelands of Skaro, amongst some ruins she encounters not just a Dalek, but Davros, a grotesque, withered half human, half Dalek. This was a time when the innards of a Dalek were seldom seen. Upon Davros's command, the Dalek destroys a series of Targets with absolute precision. Davros declares in a whisper
"Perfect, the weaponry is perfect. Now we can begin."
And with it, one of the greatest Doctor Who villains is born.
23. Army Of Ghosts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNtTbrRVAec This cliffhanger loses a significant number of points because of a gaffe that happened about 6 weeks before the episode aired. As Doctor Who collected its award at the 2006 BAFTAS, a Dalek accompanied the cast and crew. Nothing unusual about that, apart from the fact, it was the specially painted Dalek Sec, giving away the fact the Daleks would soon be reappearing. By the time of Army of Ghosts there had still been no sign of the Daleks, so what was going on? The climax of the episode revealed the Cybermen to be the titular ghosts only for the ominous Void Ship Sphere to open immediately after. Out of the sphere came 4 Daleks. Despite the previous blunder, the cliffhanger still maintains an element of excitement, not least for the fact it leaves Cybermen and Daleks in the same story! Even if ultimately 'Doomsday' divided opinion, this was still awesome.
22. Trial Of A Time Lord: Episode 13
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUiBvU9p8OY Like The Deadly Assassin before it, the climax of Trial of a Time Lord heavily features a romp inside the Matrix. As such, all bets are off when it comes to the cliffhanger. The Doctor finds himself in the middle of nowhere, hearing the laugh of the Valeyard echoing around him. One by one arms rise from the dirt beneath the Doctors feet, each of them grabs at the Doctors legs dragging him down into what becomes quicksand. Is it real? Is it an illusion? Its impossible to tell as the Doctor is about to be consumed by the hungry earth.
21. Enlightenment: Episode 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnkCAVNI86I Not often, but occasionally a cliffhanger shows us something wonderful if unexpected. The opening episode of Enlightenment appears to be set up as a pseudo historical story. As the Doctor and his companions stand on the bridge of a sailing ship a viewing window opens up revealing a fleet of sailing ships from different points in history, scattered across the stars travelling in unison, seemingly unaided. The model work is top notch and the scene is nothing short of a work of art.
