50 Best Doctor Who Cliffhangers

20. Vengeance On Varos: Episode 1

The Doctor becomes embroiled in series of punishments constructed for the recording of disciplinary video nasties. The episode heavily uses the voyeuristic devices such as the Varos control room/studio gallery as well as the television and viewers at home. One such punishment is the illusion of being stuck in a desert. The Doctor€™s brain forces his body to react as if he is baking in the sun and desperately in need of water. And just like that, the Doctor collapses. Meanwhile in the control room;
"Hold it there€ And cut."
The screen goes blank and the slimy Sil€™s laugh can be heard just as the sting of the theme tune kicks in. It€™s a clever little knock on the fourth wall.

19. The Pandorica Opens

How do you go better than Daleks vs Cybermen? How about Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, Judoon, Silurians, Sycorax, Kudlak, Autons, Pilot Fish, Hoix, Weevils and that cocaine-fueled Blowfish from 'Torchwood' all joining forces to save the universe from the Doctor? The Autons carry the Doctor, kicking and screaming into the Pandorica. Even if it doesn€™t necessarily make sense, it is an impressive spectacle with a short-lived atmosphere of victory for the Doctor€™s enemies. Meanwhile, above ground, the Auton replica of Rory has accidentally murdered his wife-to-be, Amy. Further above them, the stars go out as the universe is actually destroyed by the exploding TARDIS with River Song at the epicentre. It€™s a triple-barreled cliffhanger, which although perhaps still not satisfactorily resolved, remains memorable.

18. Bad Wolf

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfkWiQnfb0Y We have already seen the damage a lone Dalek can do, now we see a whole fleet of Dalek Saucers and with it, the greatest army of Daleks ever assembled. Our nightmares realised on-screen is a great image to go out on, and still remains one of the best. Additionally, the Doctor€™s defiance provides an exciting juxtaposition. But what cost will this one man€™s stand have?

17. Horror Of Fang Rock: Episode 3

When the Fourth Doctor goes all serious and flies against his usual eccentric nature, you know things must be bad. At the climax of episode 3, the Doctor makes a grim discovery at the base of the claustrophobic lighthouse that means simply he got it very wrong. Instead of locking the vicious and homicidal Rutan out, he€™s locked it in with them. What's going to happen? Tune in next week and find out!

16. Ambassadors Of Death: Episode 2

The Mars Probe 7 module has been recovered and the Brigadier intends to cut it open immediately, much to the frustration of the Doctor who first wishes to establish the conditions of its occupants. Establishing a radio link into the capsule, the voice repeatedly requests clearance for re-entry. The Doctor takes over, he asks the bleating astronaut;
"What is the capital of Australia? How many beans make 5?"
Each time the answer is the same, the Doctor looks at Liz and the Brigadier before snapping with perfect timing;
"Right, cut it open!"
