10. Four Faces Davros
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYWD45FN5zA This scene was pretty much the basis for David Tennant's last series two-parter. That's how good it is. And it's proof that as well as the comedy and the charm, Tom Baker was a deadly serious actor. Genesis of the Daleks was a philosophical and heart-racing episode that Baker stole the show in; Davros was the Moriarty of the moment, feeling more his equal than the Master ever had: every time he returned, this is what he had to beat. So many verbal duels between the Doctor and his enemies, from 'The Poison Sky' to 'Rise of the Cybermen' took their cues from this: it's classic Classic Who. 9. Ten Meets Sarah Jane
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAszjUxMZkE Up to now, we'd seen David Tennant fighting cats, werewolves and making a mockery of the Sycorax, but this was the moment that gave Ten depth, as Sarah Jane looked into his eyes and saw the eyes of Jon Pertwee staring back. It's one of the loveliest scenes of revived Who. Sarah Jane was different to other companions, and after bumping into the TARDIS, she realises that Tennant's the new Doctor. There's so much emotion in Elisabeth Sladen's performance, and just a sweet smile from Tennant's; she was an icon of his youth, and he's playing the icon of hers. It's barely acting at all. 8. Five's Regeneration Into Six
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvAenK95PfQ The Caves of Androzani raised the bar in many ways for the show. Some may say that Classic Who never reached those heights again, in terms of atmosphere, direction and performance. Even Peter Davison's regeneration was dramatic; there were elements of Troughton's LSD trip, as the Master urged the Doctor to die, and those that loved him willed him to regenerate. It really did feel different this time, and when Colin Baker emerged to utter the immortal word, "Change", it felt like the show being given a new lease of life all over again. Five's regeneration would later be the influence behind both Russell T Davies Doctors, and it's obvious why: it's perhaps the ultimate regeneration scene. 7. "Hello. I'm The Doctor."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCCMg-rcCQk It was more than enough for the Doctor to have captured Prisoner Zero for the Atraxi, but what followed was one of the defining moments in Matt Smith's Doctor Who career, less than an hour into it. He takes to a rooftop, and shouts down the Atraxi for attempting to burn down a Level 5 planet. He asks it to look at what happened to those who messed with the Earth before, and there in hologram form, we see all previous ten faces of the Doctor himself. Step forward Number Eleven, bow-tied and with 'I Am the Doctor' ringing in the background; Amy looks on with incandescent pride, and a new hero is born. 6. Nine Faces the Last Dalek
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pve2l3tOGk We fear the enemies more if the Doctor does. And when Nine stood face to eye-stalk with the sole remaining Dalek, it was one of the most intense Doctor Who performances ever. You can see Christopher Eccleston's lip wobbling as he confronts his demon, first terrified, then trying to anger it, and then turning darker. He tortures his enemy: the man who never carries a gun resorts to trying to inflict as much pain as he possibly can on another living thing. This was the scene that earned Eccleston the "Dark Doctor" tag. This is the Dalek scene of NewWho. And this is one of the greatest face-offs the Doctor's ever had.
