2. Theon Greyjoy

Despite being a hostage at Winterfell, and a ward to Lord Stark, the Starks treated him extremely kindly and Theon was treated similar to the Stark children. Theon was in Winterfall after his father Ballon Greyjoy attempted to stage a rebellion against the Iron Throne, but was defeated by Robert and Eddard. He was allowed to retain his position as Lord of the Iron Islands in exchange for Theon being sent to Winterfell. Theon was extremely close to the Stark family, despite being their hostage, and was very close to Robb, often advising him and helping him out. However, as Robb was riding south, Theon told Robb to send him to the Iron Islands and speak to his father Ballon about joining Robb's crusade. After his father rejected Robb, and Theon's proposal, he told Theon he planned to take the north while many of the soldiers were riding south with Robb. It didn't take long for Theon to agree to the plan and sell the Starks out. While his sister lead one charge, his father gave him a small squad and was ordered to take the coastal towns. In Theon's arrogance and determination to impress his father, he changed course and decided to march on Winterfell, which was weakened by the fact that only two members of the Stark family, in Bran and Rickon, were still there. In the end, after how nice the Starks had been to Theon while he was essentially their prisoner, for Theon to screw them so easily makes him one of the most hated characters in the series.
