6 Reasons You Need To Watch Big Mouth
1. For Adults: It's Nice Escapism
There's a powerful effect with the child characters on Big Mouth having adult voices. When you're a preteen, you want to believe you're smarter and more mature than you actually are, but in reality, you're an awkward, gross freak who hasn't got a clue what they're doing. No shame in admitting that. We've all been through it. Puberty isn't like a TV show. It's as f*cked-up as life gets for most of us.
With the kids on Big Mouth talking and joking like adults, jumping in and out of reality with their helper ghosts and monsters, and just generally having fun adventures with their adolescence, there's powerful escapism going on for the adult viewers. We wish that at the time we had our own Ghost of Duke Ellington to confide in, or that we could discuss the finer nuances of pleasuring the self with our Hormone Monster, or that we had even just a little bit of agency during the most painful and awkward time of our lives. Big Mouth is the perfect fantasy version of puberty through the lens of adults who have all been through it.
Ultimately, while Big Mouth has a lot going for it, the biggest thing to take away from it is that it teaches the lesson: as terrible as puberty was, you can still look back and laugh about it... if you toss in enough bodily humor.
