6 Ups & 5 Downs From Doctor Who Series 12
Ups!
6. The Best Episode: Ascension Of The Cybermen
Our third returning foe for the series (aside from The Master and the Judoon), are the Cybermen. Last seen in World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls to close the Capaldi/Moffat era, we were treated to a whole new design, reminiscent of an era of the Cybermen's aesthetic that began in 1968's The Invasion. Team TARDIS have finally escaped Earth, and are chasing down the Lone Cyberman they had recently had an unsuccessful run-in with during the previous episode, The Haunting of Villa Diodati.
Stir in a hearty dose of companion peril, a ridiculous twist come the close of the episode, and a Doctor at her wits' end, and you've got all the parts for quite an exhilarating episode ahead of you. The second part of the finale, The Timeless Children, was just as much of a roller coaster ride, but comparatively as far as heavy criticism goes, Ascension of the Cybermen got off pretty scot-free.
