2. The Rift Between Jaime And Cersei
In the books, Jaime Lannister's time in captivity, friendship with Brienne, and a number of other factors definitely go towards redeeming the much more ruthless character we first meet flinging a young boy from a window. This in turn makes him start to see his sister Cersei for what she is, and when she begs him to return to save her from the clutches of the Faith Militant, he ignores her pleas.
The show seems to be building up to this rift, but then goes a very different direction. When Jaime returns from the wilderness less handsome and more handless, Cersei is visibly disgusted and initially wants nothing to do with her brother/lover. When Joffrey is killed, Jaime attempts to comfort a distraught Cersei only to be rebuffed. At this point he finally seems to realise what type of person Cersei really is and it appears at first that he might be about to distance himself from her.
Instead he decides to rape her beside the corpse of her son.
This actually seems to mend the rift that was forming (something worth discussing another time!) and in this latest season Jaime even volunteers to travel to Dorne to return their daughter to King's Landing. The Kingslayer may still turn his back on Cersei at some point, but as of right now he's as devoted as ever.
