Many people quit the show after Glenn's eyes vacated his skull at the hands of Negan.
Introduced in the first season, Glenn is the one who saves Rick when he hides in the tank, and is the one who indirectly reunites the Grimes family after Rick wakes up from his coma.
Despite his exit from the show in the Season 7 premiere, Steven was very much relieved to leave the walkers behind him. He said that his time on set had given him an existential crisis, and has been open about his depression since he left. He personally felt that his character was given the short end of the stick by the showrunners' negligence of his connection to the fans. This was only made more evident from the exodus of many viewers post-Lucille.
After being swallowed by the show for 6 years, he admitted that leaving was a difficult affair, but he became a father not long afterwards and has began his new life with his family. I think I don't just speak for myself in saying that we take solace that he seems to be happier now.
