Makoto Naegi finally has things going right for him, thanks to winning a special lottery. Although an average student, Makoto is deemed the Ultimate Lucky Student with his lotto win and gets to spend the next three years as one of the most elite students in all of Japan. Things can not get any better, right? Of course not, because things immediately get worse.

As soon as he sets foot on the campus, Makoto immediately falls unconscious, later waking up in an empty classroom with security cameras and steel plates over the windows. After reading a note telling him to go to the gym, Makoto meets up with fourteen other students, each with their own unique talents and equally confused about their current situation. Before they can get to know each other, a talking robotic bear comes out and claims to be the one who trapped them there.

Providing more questions than answers, the appropriately named Monokuma tells them that unless they want to spend the rest of their lives here, they have to kill one another and get away with it. A whodunnit mystery in a high school setting, the series asks you the question: would you kill a friend to save yourself?
