7 Best YA Novels Adapted Into Hit TV Shows

5. Noughts + Crosses

Malorie Blackman's Noughts & Crosses has been loved by teens and adults alike since it was published back in 2001.

Set in the modern world with an alternate history, where Europe was conquered by African colonisers, who then kept Europeans as slaves, it focuses on a young interracial couple, Callum and Sephy, whose relationship is strained by the social tensions that try to force them apart.

After over a decade without any instalments, Blackman revamped the book series in late 2019 and, just a few months later, a long-awaited TV adaptation was released by the BBC. The show, which was co-produced by Jay-Z's Roc Nation group and featured a guest appearance from British rapper Stormzy, was generally well-received by fans for the majority of its six-episode run. However, its ending caused controversy by deviating from the novel's original conclusion.

It is not yet clear whether a second season is on the cards, but loyalists will be hoping that any follow-up will move it back in the direction of the books.
