2. Firefly (2002)
It would be criminal to not include one of the most beloved series in the history of science fiction. The series that was notoriously cut off too soon by Fox has turned into a pop culture phenomenon. Created by Joss Whedon (
The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Firefly has become one of the most popular series of all time, after only lasting 14 episodes. It appealed to all different types of people. Fans of Whedon, Science fiction, Westerns, and action enjoyed the adventures of Captain Mal (Nathan Fillion) and his crew aboard the transport ship
Serenity. Set five hundred years in the future,
Firefly was about Mal and his renegade crew as they traveled through space trying to survive by doing any job they can. Along with an impressive cast filled with Whedonverse alumni,
Firefly was an extremely original and enjoyable program that was taken from us way too soon. The show was very expensive to produce and wasnt pulling in enough viewers to keep the show running. It only aired eleven out of the fourteen episodes; the rest the episodes were included in the DVD release. Fans were outraged by the cancelation and wanted to see more
Firefly. Whedon, being the geek god that he is, adhered to the cries from fans and produced a theatrical film entitled
Serenity that picked up six months after the events of the final episode of
Firefly. Even with a film adaptation of their favorite series, fans still want more from Whedon and are constantly asking the cast when and if they will see more of the series. There have been online petitions to bring back the show and fans have even tried to raise money for Nathan Fillion to buy the series and release new episodes online. A Kickstarter project seems like the most viable option. Have the fans of the cult classic unite and produce new episodes for the show or a sequel to
Serenity. Now that Hollywood has acknowledge Kickstarter as a viable option to have the target market produce films and series, it would be a mistake to not bring back
Firefly and make up for the mistake made over ten years ago.
