7 Doctor Who TV References You (Probably) Didn't Know About

7. They're Behind You!

The Doctor's most deadly and persistent adversaries, the Daleks, are renowned for their far fetched attempts at world domination and this one is definitely up there amongst their most peculiar to date. Back in 1992, and seemingly somewhat dishevelled by their various failed Earth excursions to conquer the mortal realm, the iconic pepperpots endeavoured to take over the universe of cartoons instead when they made a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance in the popular Nickelodeon series Rugrats. The iconic pepperpots can be seen on a shelf in an episode entitled Toy Place, in which the stars of the show, Tommy and Chuckie, find themselves locked in a toy store overnight, in a premise which pretty much has all the makings of a Doctor Who classic anyway. Watch out, guys, there are Daleks about... You don't have to worry about the safety of your beloved heroes though. They were just toy Daleks, of course (since when have they been purple, though?), and it was nothing more than an innocent reference to the acclaimed science fiction series from which they originated. The animators were clearly fans of the series so it's a nice little nod to the adventures of their beloved Time Lord who, at this point, hadn't been seen on screens for 3 years following the BBC's controversial cancellation of the series in 1989. The Rugrats - keeping the memory of Doctor Who alive since 1992. So there you go. If you're a 90's kid who grew up as an avid follower of the Rugrats' adventures, and particularly if you joined the Doctor Who party when it returned to television in 2005, this subtle Easter Egg will no doubt warm the cockles of your heart when you realise that Doctor Who has been popping up throughout your entire life. Although you didn't know it at the time, perhaps this subliminal image of the Daleks was even responsible for planting the Doctor Who seed within your brain? If that's the case, you've basically got Tommy Pickles to thank for your devotion to the Doctor, and that's not to mention the fact he always carried around a screwdriver in his diaper to help him out of sticky situations. Sound familiar? Well, apart from the diaper bit. Perhaps theorising that he grew up to become the Doctor is the whole thing a bit too far, though...?
