7 Legendary TV Characters Who Deserve A Prequel Spin-Off
7. Sergeant James Doakes - Dexter
Dexter was an amazing show, but few would argue that it fizzled out towards the end, as so many great shows do when the demand is high but the supply isn't entirely justified. One of the reasons that Dexter lost its way was the lack of a great antagonist for Miami's best-loved serial killer/forensic analyst. In a nutshell, the show was left with a huge gaping hole when Sergeant James Doakes was killed at the end of season two. Doakes (played by Erik King) was the only person in Dexter's life who could see the dark and ugly truth beneath the cool and calm exterior, and his aggressive, often brutal put-downs and obsessive behaviour made Doakes an often hilarious and dangerous adversary for Dexter. Season two's final few episodes are some of the series' best work, as Doakes and Dexter finally butt heads. It's electrifying to see the two men in a battle of wits and wills. When season three begins, Doakes is greatly missed... The prequel show would follow the younger Doakes as he enlists in the US army and works in black operations, solving all manner of crimes and becoming involved with assassination and kidnap plots in Haiti and all over the world, until finally walking away from the army and becoming the cop we all fell in love with. Doakes' tough and direct attitude along with his incredible delivery of an insult or one-liner would make for a fun, action-packed show that wouldn't have to tie-in with Dexter to please the fans. It would be memorable, as Doakes makes profanity into poetry.
