7 Most Hotly Anticipated Upcoming TV Series This Fall
6. Constantine (NBC, October)
Well, they've got the hair right this time, so that's a good start. One of many DC-owned properties being adapted into television by various networks, the Hellblazer star will be appearing on NBC in autumn in a somewhat more familiar guise than Keanu Reeves' movie version all that time ago. It's okay. You can forget it now. From a pilot written by David Goyer (Warner's modern Batman & Superman movies) & Daniel Cerone and directed by Dog Soldiers and sometime Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall, this version of John Constantine - the grizzled London-born magician and supernatural detective played by Matt Ryan - has been in retirement since failing to save a young girl being dragged to hell. He's re-enlisted by an angel (Lost's Harrold Perrineau) to fight the growing forces of evil while dealing with his past sins, although because he's on a network show at least he doesn't have to deal with the consequences of chain-smoking. There's already been a small deal of controversy in regard to Constantine's sexuality - in the comics he's bisexual, but in the show he's decidedly straight - but if there aren't any more hiccoughs and the trailer is anything to go by then we should be in for an atmospheric and acerbic ride.
