7 Reasons We Need Hannibal Season 4
6. We Need To Know What Happens To Will And Hannibal
By far one of the most compelling features of Hannibal was its new take on the relationship between Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Doctor Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen).
Whereas before their relationship in the novels and films had been typified by a shared animosity, Fuller elected for a new approach, casting them as a pair of unlikely lovers bound by a shared understanding. Will, with his gift for empathy, is the only person who could ever truly understand Hannibal. Lecter, insightful and curious, provides that same kind of recognition but for Will.
It's a kind of relationship that manifests in all sorts of dark and twisted ways, and Season 3's ending typifies that more than anything. Will and Hannibal come together to slay the Red Dragon before sharing one tender embrace. In that final moment, as Will embraces the bloodlust he'd been trying to bury deep down for three seasons prior - and as Hannibal revels in that discovery - he arrives at a conclusion. Will gives himself to the darkness, and takes Hannibal over the cliff edge with him, sacrificing them both to end the duo's destructive cycle.
In Fuller's (and Will's) own words, he can't live with him, and can't live with out him - "This is the scenario where the least amount of people can die.”
Of course, the pair's apparent death was upended almost instantly in the episode's post-credits sequence, which sees Gillian Anderson's Bedelia Du Maurier serving up her own leg at a dinner table set for three. Fuller has since confirmed that Hannibal was the one who prepared the meal, and the presence of a third seat at the table heavily suggests that Will is there with him.
So, what are the two getting up to now? Are they living a secluded, cannibalistic lifestyle surrounded by a legion of dogs? Is Will content to leave everything behind, and what would it take for them to get involved in another case? WE HAVE TO KNOW.
